We are living through a time that asks more of us than most of us were prepared to give.

The systems we were told would hold us, political, ecological, economic, social, are showing their cracks. Some of them are crumbling entirely and for those of us who do this work, who hold space for others, who tend communities, who pour ourselves into the possibility of a different world, the question beneath all the other questions is this:

How do we stay rooted when the ground itself is shifting?

Resourcing is not the same as self-care, though it can include that. It is not a break from the work. It is the practice of remembering and returning to what is genuinely and deeply sustaining. This is not to escape the difficulty, but to be capable of remaining present within it. A resourced person does not need the world to stop being hard. They have found a way to be nourished even amidst adversities.

What I have come to understand through years of holding space for communities in crisis, and through my own seasons of depletion and return, is that the deepest resources are not things we acquire. They are things we remember. They were always here. Behind us, beneath us, beside us, above us, and opening in front of us.

This is what the Five Directions practice invites. This is a deep act of remembering and re-membering. A reorientation toward what is already holding you, even now, even in these trying times.
